ultram (generic name tramadol) is a prescription medicine that relieves moderate to severe pain. Taking ultram with certain other drugs may increase the amount of ultram in the blood, increasing the likelihood of side effects.

Many different types of antidepressant drugs such as fluoxetine (brand name Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and amitriptyline (Elavil) can interact with ultram. If you're taking an antidepressant medication, be sure to mention it to your doctor. Other drugs such as selegeline (Eldepryl), quinidine (Quiniglute), and carbamazepine (Tegretol), can also interact.

In rare cases, ultram has been reported to cause seizures. You should avoid combining it with other drugs that also increase the risk of seizures such as cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), promethazine (Phenergan), and haloperidol (Haldol).

ultram can cause drowsiness, you should avoid other medications with this effect. Unless directed by a doctor, don't use alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, antihistamines, or narcotic pain relievers while taking it.
To avoid drug interactions, be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications that you're taking before you begin ultram.

ultram - Drug Interaction

ultram was administered to 550 patients during the double-blind or open-label extension periods in U. S. studies of chronic non-malignant pain. Of these patients, 375 were 65 years old or older. Table 2 reports the cumulative incidence rate of adverse reactions by 7, 30 and 90 days for the most frequent reactions (5% or more by 7 days). The most frequently reported events were in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal system.

The reported rates also include some events that may have been due to underlying disease or concomitant medication. The overall incidence rates of adverse experiences in these trials were similar for ultram and the active control groups, TYLENOL ® with Codeine #3 (acetaminophen 300 mg with codeine phosphate 30 mg), and aspirin 325 mg with codeine phosphate 30 mg, however, the rates of withdrawals due to adverse events appeared to be higher in the ultram groups.

ultram - Precaution

ultram drug is available over the counter but for people who have some breathing difficulty, kidney disease, liver disease, seizures, alcohol or drug abuse problem, stomach problems, or any allergic reaction to this drug should consult doctor instead of trying it themselves. ultram can interact with many drugs; hence it is wise to tell your doctor in case you are having some other medication too.
